Diffusing seasonal essential oils is a simple and soothing way to honor the fall season, which happens to be my favorite time of year.

Now, I’m not talking pumpkin spice and other sickly sweet, artificial baked good scents. I am talking natural and seasonally appropriate essential oils that will make your home smell lovely and lift your spirits all season long.

This post includes my six favorite autumn essential oils. Also in this post, a free PDF of my favorite essential oil blend recipes for your diffuser this fall!

What are essential oils and how do they work?

Essential oils are extracted from plants for use in aromatherapy, which is the incorporation of certain scents for healing and wellbeing. In other words, essential oils have strong fragrances that, when inhaled, can affect our mind, body, and spirit, and oils from different plants are believed to help with different ailments or purposes.

Six best essential oils to diffuse this fall

Here are my six favorite fall essential oils. And at the end of the list, download a PDF of the best fall essential oil blends to diffuse this season.

1. Orange

Orange essential oil, extracted from the rind of oranges, is a great energizer and mood booster. It also has a very clean smell, which makes me love diffusing it when people are coming over.

2. Cedarwood

Obtained from various parts of the cedar tree, cedarwood essential oil is believed to help with insomnia and anxiety. Diffusing this oil can help you simmer down and unwind after a long day.

3. Bergamot

Bergamot is a stress-relieving and mood-elevating oil. When holiday planning stress starts to rear its ugly head, bergamot (and an extensive to-do list) might just do the trick!

4. Patchouli

I’m going to go ahead and call patchouli an acquired scent. It is warm and spicy and pungent (and “just too marijuana-y” if my mother has anything to say about it). Patchouli is a balancing scent, which means it can help us feel more centered, balanced, and at ease. I like to use it for meditation and tarot reading because its earthy scent helps me feel grounded.

5. Cinnamon

Cinnamon essential oil is technically a relaxant, but I think it’s just too closely linked to holidays to be relaxing per se. It’s a cozy scent though, so if you’re curling up with some reading material on a rainy day, cinnamon essential oil in your diffuser is a great idea.

6. Frankincense

Frankincense is such a sacred part of my Armenian culture. It is collected from the resin of special trees and it is known to be spiritually cleansing and uplifting. It promotes feelings of peace and wellbeing.

If you grew up in any type of ornate orthodox religion, frankincense is what church smells like! So keep that in mind in terms of connotations this fragrance might bring up for you.

Want to try some fall essential oil blends for your diffuser?

You can always diffuse just one essential oil at a time, but one of the most potent and fun ways to work with essential oils is to try different combinations.
