The Moon’s Healing Energy
Most people accept the moon’s effect on the ebb and flow of ocean tides here on earth. But does the moon have any meaningful effect on human behavior? Myths of full moon “lunacy” (which comes from the word lunar, after all) abound, but what about the moon’s other phases, like the new moon?
Whether or not scientists back the belief that the moon is a highly influential force in our lives, the lunar phases–from new to full and back again–can offer a natural and meaningful spiritual cycle that helps us find balance. Many people believe particularly in the healing energy of the moon at its two most prominent phases: new and full.
The Energy of the New Moon
The first lunar phase, the new moon, is pretty much invisible to the naked eye. From here, the. moon gradually grows bigger (or waxes) until it reaches maximum illumination in the full moon phase. After the full moon, the moon then wanes back into apparent oblivion to start the cycle over again with the next new moon.
As such, the new moon marks an opportunity for us to begin a fresh cycle as well, and new moon rituals and observances tend to focus on growth: visioning, setting intentions, and mapping out goals so that we can refocus on our values and realign with our soul’s purpose.
(Contrast this new moon energy with that of the full moon, which instead calls us to reflect, release, and achieve closure, rather than begin something new.)
Four Tarot Spreads for the New Moon
Because a new moon symbolizes new beginnings and fresh starts, it is the perfect time to meditate on and use tarot cards to consult your intuition about exploring new ideas, launching new projects, beginning a new adventure, or starting over when something hasn’t worked out.
Below are four tarot spreads that are perfect for the new moon. Ideally, you should do these spreads on the first night of the new moon, when new moon energy is at its peak. But I have done new moon spreads right before the new moon and any time before the full moon, as the crescent grows larger in the sky.
The Start Over Tarot Spread
The new moon represents new seeds and the beginning of the life cycle. It is a great opportunity to allow yourself to regroup and go back to square one on a project, relationship, or other goal that has not been working out. The new moon is a perfect time to regroup and start over.
This first new moon tarot spread helps you to do just that.
