Summer is here, and I don’t know about you, but my summer must-haves are a little different this year. If 2020 is teaching me anything, it is the importance of staying in flow with the energy of the universe and working with things like the seasons, moon phases, and our own body’s cycles.

So what kind of energy are we working with in the summer months? Find out in this post, along with 13 essential summer must-haves to help you live your best life this summer.

What is the spiritual meaning and energy of summer?

Summer starts with the summer solstice on June 21st. The summer solstice marks when the Earth is closest to the sun, the longest day of the year. After the 21st of June, every day gets a little bit shorter and shorter as we head toward the darker half of the year.

What this means is that summer is both a time of celebration, excitement, extravagance, and good fortune as well as a time to slow down, rest, reenergize, and reflect.

Because of the dual energies present in the summer season, I have divided my list of 13 summer must-haves into two parts.

The first seven items celebrate the exciting peak that is summer. Summer is bright, loud, vibrant, and vivacious, and I want this list to inspire and excite you to embrace the bold and bright parts of your personality and surroundings.

The last six items are for the sensual, relaxing, wind-down of summer. Extroversion gives in to periods of rest and reflection, so I wanted my essential summer must-haves to reflect and prepare you for that energy as well.

So without further ado, on to the list of summer must-haves to help you harness and flow with this season’s dual energy.

Part 1: Seven summer must-haves to help your soul feel alive and free.

1. Invigorating citrusy scents

Summer is a time of rising and shining like the sun. So, energize and invigorate your senses with bright, citrusy scents like lemon, grapefruit, and orange. You could diffuse some plain orange or lemon essential oil, like I do. Or you could pamper yourself with some citrus-scented goodies.

Here are my picks:

13 Essential Summer Must-Haves for Your Soul | Energize and invigorate your senses with bright, citrusy scents by brands like Lush, L'occitane, and more.

The natural grapefruit scent of the Renew Nourishing Cleanser by True Botanicals ($48) cleans and moisturizes aging and dry skin.

The Eminence Citrus Lip Balm softens and provides vitamin C to your pout. It’s also certified organic and vegan.

The Olive Branch bath bomb by Lush blends lemon, Sicilian mandarin, orange flower, and bergamot for a seriously citrus spa experience.

L’occitane’s Citrus Verbena Refreshing Water Gel is an invigorating, micro-bubbly, lightweight moisturizer. Perfect for days that are too sweaty for slathering on lotion or cream.

If you just asked yourself “What the hell is water gel?” stick with Pharmacopia’s citrus body lotion. It’s all natural, organic, vegan, and cruelty-free.

If you’re a 90s kid like me, channel your favorite decade with Happy by Clinique. Ruby red grapefruit and bright bergamot make this a timeless summer fragrance.

Finally, bring the beach to you no matter where you are with the Big Mega-Mandarin Body Spray by Lush.

2. Fun, retro-inspired sunglasses

Summer reminds us that the future is so bright, you gotta wear shades! Fun fact: Back when I was a lawyer, the entire firm signed a birthday card for me that had that greeting on the cover.

I never leave home without my favorite pair of cat-eye tortoise shell Miu Miu sunglasses. They instantly make any outfit and the retro vibes are really fun and playful. So whether it’s some delicate round pair that channels John Lennon or a Lolita-inspired red heart-shaped pair, find some fun vintage sunnies to rock this summer.

3. Vivid, vibrant artwork

If the year were a tall mountain, summer would be the glorious view at the very top. Extravagant, opulent beauty and sensual stimulation is a hallmark of summer. One way to channel this vivacious summer energy is to feast your eyes on vivid, vibrant artwork.

If you enjoyed art history in school, try one of the Fauvist painters of the early 20th century, like Henri Matisse or Andre Derain, who revolutionized the use of expressive color in paintings.

On the other hand, if you’re into contemporary graphic art, follow these amazing women illustrators on Instagram:

4. Statement jewelry

Summer invites us to channel our inner extrovert, be bold, and make a splash. And while we’re still social distancing and not throwing big parties, we can still rock some festive party vibes in other ways.

How? If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably noted my new obsession with statement earrings. (Hey, one of the perks of the pixie cut is exposed ears at all times.)

Here are some out of this world statement earrings sold by Humans Before Handles.

Happy As Annie | 13 Essential Summer Must-Haves for Your Soul | Channel the vibrant and celebratory energy of summer by rocking some statement jewelry, like these gorgeous statement earrings by Humans Before Handles. You'll be supporting a woman-owned and black-owned business while you shop!

And if you’re not exactly obsessing over earrings like I am right now, here are two fierce statement necklaces sold by Uterque.

5. Unabashed and authentic party music

The abundance of sun in the summer means it is time to channel rich fire energy. So I make sure to put away my beloved Joni Mitchell and acoustic hits for some loud and proud artists that inspire us to embrace our passion and creativity in delicious audacity that feels so natural in the summer.

I’m talking queer, gender fluid, BIPOC artists that inspire you to come as you are, take up space in the sunshine, and celebrate life.

My picks? Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG and Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You.

Fun fact: Bad Bunny’s album title stands for “Yo hago lo que me da la gana,” which is Spanish for “I do whatever I want.” Yup, that’s what I want this summer too! And of course, I’m still wearing a mask and keeping my distance! But I can feel empowered, curious, and fired up while I do it, rather than just complaining about boredom.

I love Lizzo’s refrain: “I’m a thick bitch, I need tempo. Fuck it up to the tempo.” Summer is all about tempo. Lizzo knows what’s up.

6. Candles – summer magic must-haves

Summer’s fire energy makes me think of the element of fire used in candle magic. Try lighting a candle, setting an intention, and visualizing yourself embodying that intention in great detail as you watch the candle’s flame burn. Let the candle burn itself out as your intention takes hold.

Happy As Annie | 13 Essential Summer Must-Haves for Your Soul | Harness summer's fire energy with candle magic, like the magic intention candles by House of Intuition.

If you need some guidance with candle magic, House of Intuition’s magic intention candles are perfect to get you started. Each jar candle is infused with an intention and includes instructions for working with it on the back. As an added bonus, each candle has a secret crystal inside of it like the prize at the bottom of the cereal box.

7. Bright fiery crystals, like carnelian

13 Essential Summer Must-Haves for Your Soul | Happy As Annie (Collection of crystals on wooden slab with other objects)

According to Energy Muse, carnelian “is a warm, vibrant stone that boosts confidence and the power of true expression.”

And that’s exactly the type of summer energy I’ve been channeling with my picks so far.  Having crystals around your home, carrying them in your purse, or wearing them as jewelry is believed to attract frequencies that match those of the crystals and help you manifest the properties of that crystal for yourself.

Part 2: Six essential summer must-haves to help your soul recuperate and reenergize.

The flip-side of the revelry of summer is the mindful slow-down that follows it. After the summer solstice, the days get shorter and shorter, inviting us to slow our pace and be present in each moment. This mindfulness allows us to recuperate and reflect so that we can reenergize and prepare for the start of work, school, or other new projects in the fall.

8. Swaying, tropical island music

Buena Vista Social Club’s Cuban jazz is iconic chill music. Summer is all about balance, so while there is absolutely an invitation to “fuck it up to the tempo” (see #5 above), there’s also nothing wrong with sitting back and social distancing in peace. Any time I hear BVSC, I’m instantly transported to a hammock with a mojito in my hand as beautiful couples dance around me.

9. A playful pool floatie

Speaking of sitting back and enjoying the present moment, summer isn’t about swimming laps around an Olympic-sized pool. It’s about splashing around with joy, doing a cannon ball or two, or just floating lazily.

10. Wind chimes

Wind chimes aren’t just pretty and relaxing. When it comes to energy, wind chimes, like bells, literally move energy when they vibrate to make sound. And in so doing, they move stagnant or static energy, cleansing the aura of the space.

Many people believe wind chimes not only raise the vibrations of a home but also protect the home from negative energy and attract positive forces instead.

Here are some beautiful wind chimes I found on Etsy. All of them are under $50!

Windchimes available on Etsy

Above on the left is the 40″ windchime waterfall by The Boho Gypsy Shop.  On the right is the sustainable bamboo wind chime by Cohasset Gifts Studio.

Star and Moon Wind Chim by Moon Flower Gifts Shop on Etsy

I love this smaller star and moon wind chime by Moon Flower Gifts Shop too, shown above. Three brass bells hang from the crescent.

Chakra Rainbow Colored Wind Chime Sun Catcher by Buddha Art on Etsy

For a stunning visual effect, I recommend the chakra rainbow colored glass wind chime and sun catcher by Buddha Art.

(For more on chakras and which color represents which chakra, check out my Chakras for Beginners post.)

Ceramic wind chimes by Fettle and Fire on Etsy

Finally, I love the cool tones of these ceramic wind chimes by Fettle and Fire. These would look great indoors as well if you are an apartment dweller like me and don’t have a patio or yard of your own.

11. Himalayan salt lamp

Himalayan salt lamp from Amazon

Another way to bring the outdoors inside this summer is with a Himalayan salt lamp.

Himalayan salt lamps balance electromagnetic radiation, purify the air, boost blood flow, and raise energy levels. Since summer is about recuperation and reenergizing ourselves in preparation for the fall, a Himalayan salt lamp may be the perfect addition to your home.

12. Anything written by Alan Watts

Alan Watts was a Western (British, actually) Buddhist writing about Eastern spirituality and wisdom after WWII. He talks about man’s tendency to look for meaning in life and bluntly yet masterfully offers the possibility that there is no meaning beyond living in the moment and realizing that the only constant is change.

The summer season calls us to live in the moment and enjoy the present, so Watts is the perfect beach read in my opinion.

The Wisdom of Insecurity by Alan Watts

This Is It might be his best-known book, but my favorite is The Wisdom of Insecurity, in which he argues that our anxiety comes from our tendency to live in the future and yearn for some larger meaning or guarantee out of life.

13. A journal for reflection and introspection

If you’re like me or many of my students, writing isn’t just for recording our reflections. The act of writing and journaling actually brings out deeper reflection and thoughts you may not even realize you have until you see them written on the page.

So, my summer must-haves list would be incomplete without nerding out over some summer notebook possibilities with you. The following can all be found in the Happy As Annie affiliate shop on Bookshop.org. That means you’ll be supporting independent bookstores while you shop.

Agreed. Have you noticed that our favorite summer songs are more memorable than, say, our favorite spring songs? Summer jams are so powerful!
