How to Set Better Goals and Actually Achieve Them

we all probably know how important it is to set goals. but how exactly should you go about doing this? what will help you actually achieve these goals and feel better for doing so?  below are two tips that have helped me set better goals and actually achieve them!

tip 1: set 10 goals in 10 life areas

in level 10 success, motivational speaker hal elrod identifies 10 areas of life in which we must feel successful in order to feel fully satisifed and fulfilled. in other words, on a scale of 1-10, we should strive for a “level 10” experience in all 10 of these areas.

i’ve tweaked elrod’s 10 areas a bit to come up with the following 10 life areas for me:

1. marriage. 2. family. 3. friends. 4. career. 5. business. 6. finances. 7. health + fitness. 8. personal development. 9. spirituality. 10. fun + recreation.

i like approaching self-improvement in this way because it prevents me from focusing on just one area of my life. at any moment, i may be obsessing over money goals, my weight, or something else. but keeping tabs on all ten of my significant life areas ensures that i’m not neglecting family or friends, for instance, in the race to my first million dollars. if you’re prone to tunnel vision like i am, then this approach will probably help you too!

you may have several goals in each category, but to avoid overload, pick just your top goal for each category. this way, you’re being realistic and methodical in what you’re working toward. you don’t want to look at a massive list of goals and be overwhelmed out of action! ten is more than enough i think.

tip 2: post your top 10 goals where you will see them regularly.

after you’ve picked your top 10 goals, post them somewhere you will see them every day. this can be in your planner, on your bathroom mirror, or on a vision board. whatever works for you!

    I love that you separated goals by life areas. I need to work on a vision board to make my goals visible!

    That’s where I find I struggle. I always obsess over one area of my life and tend not to focus on other areas. But I think it’s time to really write down my goals, put them in three places: my daily planner, vision board and bathroom mirror. Time to really focus and buckle down!

      right?? any time i feel like i’m flailing in life i realize it’s because i don’t have any goals set so i don’t know what i’m doing!

    I think this is great, I have only set goals in a few areas but not 10. Also, I often forget or get off track with goals I have already set, so displaying them somewhere I will see daily is a great idea!!

    Great tips! I need to start writing down my goals. I know them in my head, but I think it would help to see them visually each day too.
