Using Labels to Keep Track of Store Credit and Gift Cards

so i was cleaning out my wallet (a black pocket-sized filofax finsbury, video coming soon!) and found three forever 21 store credit cards in there. did they even have any money left on them? and if so, how much?

so i decided to solve the mystery right then and there and, in fact, do so for every gift card or store credit card lying around the house. after figuring out the balance on each one (fortunately, forever 21 has a super easy online system), i wrote each down a small white label and stuck the label to the front of each card. why has it taken me years to figure this out? i’ve looked at these cards and literally said to myself every time, “ugh, i wish it would just say the balance on the card!” well now it does. and back in my wallet they go so i know exactly how much impulse buying to do next time i pass by a forever 21!

How do you organize your gift cards to keep track of them? I tend to either completely misplace them and therefore never use the money on them, or use some of it and then can’t easily tell how much is left on the card without going through the process of calling the number on the back to get a balance? I would love some tips to make this easier and not be literally leaving money on the table.
